Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing these treatments need to be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
